The Rabbit Who Put the Moon to Sleep
Cotton the rabbit
On top of a hill lived a little rabbit. His name was Cotton. Every evening Cotton watched the village. One evening the village lights went out, one by one. But one light stayed in the sky. The Moon was still awake.

Cotton looked up. “Moon, why aren’t you sleeping?” he said. The Moon came down softly. “I’m cold,” she said. “I don’t have a blanket.” Cotton thought. Then he ran.

Cotton brought his blanket from his burrow. The blanket had red and blue patterns on it. He laid the Moon down on the grass. He pulled the blanket over her. “Good night, Moon,” he said. “Come again tomorrow.”

The Moon smiled. She closed her eyes. Her light grew soft and slow. Cotton lay down beside her. The grass was warm. The two of them slept together. The village was peaceful all night long.

Tonight’s lesson
Falling asleep is a kind of care too: wishing someone else good night makes it easier for a child to cross into sleep.
Ask before sleep
- Which of your blankets would you give the Moon?
- Who would you like beside you when you sleep tonight?
